This plant has many virtues.
It is used as a condiment for various sauces, including yellow sauce among the Bamiléké or bongo'o among the Bassa in Cameroon. In Ghana, Tetrapleura tetraptera is used as a tea or to make sweets because the pulp is sweet and aromatic.
All parts of the plant have many uses in traditional medicine in Africa, but the fruits, considered anti-arthritic , anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic , are most commonly used to treat conditions as diverse as: Cardiovascular or digestive disorders , hypertension , epilepsy , convulsions , fever , immunodeficiency , dental problems.
The fruit is also known as Esese or Oshosho.
