Penja pepper is a pepper grown in Cameroon in the commune of Penja.
Pepper is grown here on a few plantations in a valley on the fertile volcanic soil of Mount Cameroon. In addition to this, the very good climatic conditions, the tropical climate, ensure that an excellent quality of pepper grows here.
Since 2013, Penja pepper has been the first pepper to bear the African IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) label, which protects the pepper's designation of origin.
But what aroma does it bring with it? Very full-bodied, harmonious and ripe in flavour, it goes well with fish, poultry, salads, spicy cottage cheese dishes, light soups and sauces. It is also very rich in minerals. Its wonderful aroma is also increasingly appreciated by top chefs.
Unlike Penja black pepper, it is harvested when ripe and dried in the sun. To remove the skin from the kernel, the ripe red berries are soaked in water for several days. White penja pepper is slightly less intense than the black version.
